Java is an island in Indonesia. Java plays a dominant role in the economic and political life of Indonesia. Indonesia administrative capital, Jakarta, lies in Java island. Java is the most populous island in the world, with a population of more than 120 million.
The Dutch came to Java under the auspices of the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie), at the beginning of the 17th century. Success in the commercial sector encouraged a number of them to settle in the tropical region better known as the Netherlands East Indies. In adjusting to the tropical climate, they adopted chintz (batik Sembagi) from India for daily dress.
There are many cities in Java that produce batik, such us Pekalongan, Cirebon, Yogyakarta, and Solo. But we put javanese category here because there are many batik that are not strongly categorize in those cities.
